Help! How Do I Get Deleted Files Back?

First of all… DO NOT PANIC!

Do not try and attempt to find deleted files, or get deleted files back, until you have read this first. It will give you a clear explanation of what has happened, and what you must and must not do to get deleted files back.

VERY IMPORTANT!

*** In order to find, and successfully recover deleted files, it is now very important that nothing else is written to that device ***

The lost data is probably still there, but it is now at risk of being overwritten by any new files that are created or saved. This will make the recovery of deleted files more difficult and lower the likelihood that you will to get deleted files back. So try and avoid this by minimising disk activity. Reducing, or preferably eliminating, the writing of any new data to the disk or device on which you want to find deleted files is the single most important thing you can do to increase the likelihood that you will achieve successful recovery of deleted files and get deleted files back without data loss.

How to Get Deleted Files Back from a PC Hard Drive

If you need to get deleted files back from your computer’s hard drive in particular, you should refrain from any further activity on that computer. This means you should not use it to browse the internet as this causes lots of temporary files to be written to the disk. Remember, any disk activity reduces the likelihood that you will be able to get deleted files back successfully.

You should NOT open applications or programs as this also often causes lots of disk activity making the recovery of deleted files more difficult.

You should also NOT close any applications or programs as this may cause files to be updated and saved to the disk. Any application that is still writing data to disk should be halted if possible, preferably still without actually closing it.

Do NOT shut down, close or reboot your PC. This may cause applications or Windows itself to save data by creating new files, potentially overwriting your lost data and again making the recovery of deleted files more unlikely.

If you are reading this page on the same computer on which you need to find deleted files, do nothing further on this computer. Do not close this internet browser window. Use another computer and visit this site, Get Deleted Files Back, from there instead.

More specific information on how to get deleted files back on a PC hard drive can be found here at File and Data Recovery on a PC.

Get Deleted Files Back from a Camera Card or USB device

It is usually easier to find deleted files on these devices as they are normally used for data storage and not for running applications. However, the same principle applies. In order to have the best chance of successful file recovery, do not save or update any data to the device. Successful recovery of deleted files requires that nothing overwrites where the lost data was stored on the device.

OK, so now how do I Get my Deleted Files Back?

At this stage, in order to find the deleted files and perform a successful recovery of deleted files, you need to step back and review what happened to cause them to get deleted in the first place….

If the files have been deleted from your computer’s hard drive, they may still be in the Recycle Bin. If you are sure this is the case, this is an easy remedy. Just use Windows Explorer or My Computer to open the Recycle Bin, find the deleted files and then restore the lost data.

However, you may have emptied the Recycle Bin, or deleted straight from a USB memory device or Camera Card etc. Doing this bypasses the Recycle Bin. Depending on what has been written to the device in the meantime, the data of the deleted file may still be present on the device. All that has been lost is the operating system’s ‘pointer’ to where it is on the disk.

Alternatively, the device may have been reformatted causing all data to be deleted. While this may seem to be an irreversible situation, most of the deleted data is still likely to be present on the device and it should be possible to get the deleted files back.

Recovery of Deleted Files

There are a few options available to you at this stage.

The easiest is to take a trip down to your local computer store for assistance. However, in the case of a PC this means losing power and shutting down the computer which is not recommended. In the case of a laptop device, you have however long the battery will last for to avoid the same scenario. To achieve recovery of deleted files most effectively, requires that the disk with the lost data is in the same condition as when the files were deleted.

Or you can look for one of the many tools and utilities for the recovery of deleted files available on the internet. As mentioned previously, DO NOT use the internet on the same system on which you need to get deleted files back.

There are several free and commercial tools for use in different circumstances. Some file recovery software tools will recover lost files individually. Some provide more powerful functionality to enable the recovery of deleted files in bulk. Others provide a greater degree of disk analysis and management to deal with recovering reformatted drives etc.

What to look for in File Recovery Software

Free products can work, however the wrong product can also do more harm than good.

For security and safety reasons be wary of executable version only file downloads that are not certificated. Some products are available as both executable only and installable versions. Usually, the installable versions are preferable. However, executable versions can be better if you have absolutely no choice but to download a product onto the same drive that you need to recover lost files from. This is because there is none of the additional disk activity as involved with a typical installation process. This means the likelihood of being able to find deleted files and restore the lost data is increased.

Products must be able to work from a different disk drive or device than the one on which you wish to find the deleted files. Preferably it should be possible to download the software using a different computer onto a USB memory stick and use it from there.

The product should be able to work on USB devices and removeable media such as camera cards, MP3 players, iPods, etc.

Good file recovery products should also be able to recover lost files of all types, and not be limited to specific types.

Commercial products should enable you to verify whether your deleted files can still be seen and what condition they are in prior to purchase. The best include a preview thumbnail of files that can be seen.

The better products provide different levels of disk analysis. Many recently deleted files are easily detectable using a ‘quick scan’ of the logical device (e.g. your C: drive or E: drive etc). Other cases may require a full cluster level scan of the disk and/or a search of the physical drive instead. There is usually a trade off between the degree of analysis, the number of files found and general effectiveness versus the time taken to find deleted files.

Some products can also improve the likelihood of the recovery of deleted files using file signatures to identify fragments of lost data on the disk.
